Among the most studied in recent years is turmeric, an ingredient commonly found in Indian curry, a spice that has demonstrated potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and potential chemo-preventive agent. Turmeric was found to suppress and destroy blood cancer cells. The damage to the DNA of cells can cause cancer. Some spices protect the cell from damage to its DNA. Those proven to do so include turmeric, cloves, seasame seed and mustard seeds.
Garlic is yet another spice widely studied in recent years for its chemopreventive potential. Higher intake of allium products is associated with reduced risk of stomach and colorectal cancers.
